What running gear do I need?

Running shoes – You will need proper running shoes. The running distances of half and full Ironman races involve a lot of time on your feet – between a half marathon and a full marathon respectively. You need properly fitting, comfortable shoes with adequate support and designed specifically for running long distances. Don’t just choose any ordinary pair of shoes, after all, you not ordinary, you’re a multisport athlete.

Elastic laces – make life easier, just slide your feet in your running shoes tighten the elastic laces and off you go – no more tying laces and dealing with knotted laces. If your shoes don’t have elastic/race laces you can buy them in store or through our online shop – most shoes are compatible with them. For the triathletes out there these laces save you time and hassle doing away with conventional laces.

Sun Glasses – a good pair of sunglasses will be polarised making your run more comfortable by cutting the glare helping you clearly see the race course or run path as well as helping you not strain your eyes while running. A quality pair will also have anti-fog properties helping them remain clear so you can remain focused on your run. Anti-chaff –  You can use the same that you use for you swim with your wetsuit, which you can apply before the race on the areas where you normal.y chafe during your runs. One specifically for use with wetsuits. Ordinary anti-chafe creams and oils can damage your wetsuit. Only use anti-chaff products that specifically are designed for wetsuit use too.

Watch – Pacing is quite important on the run and much easier to track than during the swim. You should be running with a GPS watch that can give you your running pace and heart rate zone if you wish to take your training to the next level.

Stash Belt – Nutrition on the run in important. This is the last leg of a triathlon and by this point, your body has taken on a ton of strain. You need to be carrying your nutrition with you. Whether it is energy chews, sweets, bars or gels. Most triathletes will be carrying them in their tri suit or will wear a belt that has stitched elastic bands to hold gels and bars or small zips easily accessible during the run.

What supplements to take for running?

Hydration – the first and easiest on the list, but the one most people get wrong. Many athletes either don’t drink enough during their run or drink too much – both are unhealthy and can negatively impact your run performance. Go by how you feel. Your body will tell you when it needs more water – listen to it! When do I replace my running shoes?

Unfortunately, there is no a single distance after which you must replace your shoes – which will be right for everyone. The reason is there are several variables at play such as the materials of the shoe, the surfaces which it is run on, how the athlete takes care of the shoes – even climate can affect the lifespan of your running shoes. Below are some points to help you determine whether your current running shoes need replacing.

Running Shoe Assessment:

Outersole – Start by looking at the outsole of your shoes and the rubber that comes in direct contact with the ground. How worn is the tread? Slight wear is normal but a good pair of running shoe tread should last well into their life if not until they need replacing. Your running shoes’ thread should never be smooth.

Midsole – The next section to inspect is your running shoe midsole this part undergoes compression each time you land on your shoe and protects your joints and feet from excessive strain and impact. This can we felt by your shoes not having the feeling of bounce they used to have. You can also compress the inner sole with a thumb after removing the inner sole and after indenting it should push out back to how it was before. You may notice your shoe feeling very ‘flat’ and stiff. It is also essential to listen to your body. If you are accumulating aches and pains and have ruled out other causes it could be your shoes that need replacing. Keep in mind that not all damage is visible don’t rely only on their appearance.

Body weight – If you lean toward a heavier build inspect your shoes more regularly and if you are following estimates for wear such as between 300-900 miles, consider going by the lower number to replace them. This is because inside the material of the shoes there are tiny air pockets in the actual synthetic material over time when enough of these air pockets have been crushed it is no longer good for you to continue running in them.

Comfort – A sure fire sign that your running shoes need replacing is you find yourself constantly needing to adjust them within the first 1-3km. If you keep needing to adjust the salves and adjust the tongue it may be time to replace them. If after several weeks you still don’t feel the shoes are ‘broken-in’ if within 2-3 weeks of running with them they are still not comfortable there most probably need replacing or were the wrong size, to begin with.
